Medical Terminology refers to the words and language used specifically in the medical and health fields. The proper definition describes medical terminology as language used to describe anatomical structures, procedures, conditions, processes, and treatments in the medical field. Medical terminology is the foundation of medical literature and research. It enables healthcare professionals to access, understand and contribute to ever-expanding medical knowledge. It supports career advancement. Medical terminology provides sets of terms to describe healthcare professionals’ judgments, treatments and healthcare sensitive patient outcomes. Learners/students will be able to identify common prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining vowels and abbreviations so they can recognize most medical terms used by medical professionals. A skill of learning medical terminology is that healthcare professionals will also have an understanding of the structure of an electronic health record and extract vital information from it.
